Astronomy for kids can be revelatory for kids & parents alike!
Humanity has been mesmerized by the night sky for many thousands of years, probably back to the beginning of human kind. When you observe the night sky, there's something magical about this ever changing display. As we get older, many of us begin to take this display for granted, but kids are instinctively drawn to laying down on the grass and staring at the sky. This is probably because it's just one of the many mysteries in young lives so eager to understand the world around them. Parents can give kids a firm grounding in life with a few activities in astronomy for kids viewpoints. Here are just a few ideas to get you started on this adventure. You may also regain that long forgotten sense of wonder that comes so naturally to kids. The night sky exploration and observation is a good place to start. When the evening's mild, take some blankets and get the whole family out in the back yard for a little communal appreciation. Rural areas give the best view, so if you live in a big city, bundle up the kids and drive to a vantage point that's safe and away from the big city lights, which tend to drown out the stars and heavenly bodies. Camping trips are an excellent way to introduce this astronomy for kids appreciation. If you can, bring a map of the constellations so you can point out the ones on current display. Another wonderful astronomy for kids activity requires a telescope. With this instrument, you may be able to see Saturn with its fascinating rings. Get a closer look at the moon. Find Venus. Kids are enthralled with these close up views of heavenly bodies they've only seen pictured in books. By the time you've explored these kids astronomy activities, you can schedule a visit to the planetarium. Planetariums usually have a changing show, sometimes weekly, along with some special event shows. A visit to a planetarium can be better than a movie for entertainment value, with excellent lighting effects and narrators. It's almost guaranteed the kids will want to make repeat visits. Following the planetarium show, visit the gift shop for some beautiful and educational astronomy related items. In addition to high resolution photos, star maps and models, you'll find books geared to kids, along with some fabulous software. These shops also have the fluorescent star stickers which kids love to put on the ceiling of their rooms. By now, you've really started your kids on a path of further exploration. Show them how to use Google's image search to find planetary bodies. Such activities promote interest in astronomy for kids and perhaps you too, in a very fun-filled way. Who knows that one of these kids might become a renowned astronomer?
