Life goes by so very fast. It seems like only yesterday that I was leaving my parents home and starting college. Now I am at the point in my life where I have worked in my career, gotten married, raised a family and are watching them begin their careers. Our retirement years are now what we are concentrating on getting ready for. I do not know where all the time has gone, but I do realize how short life really is.
We have two children a son and daughter. Our son has completed college, obtained a job, gotten married and recently purchased his first home. He and his wife are discussing having a family, which will put my husband and me into our grand parenting years. Our daughter has completed college and is looking to buy a house. She has always been practical and has decided that a house would be a better investment than renting. She has located a small home that she can afford, but she will have few finances left to furnish it. She asked me if I could help her locate inexpensive furniture. We discussed looking at second hand stores, especially for tables and chairs. She has a love seat and chair that she used in college that is still in good shape. Each of the children took there bedroom furniture when they left for college and my husband and I replaced it with new in our home. Her room mate had the tables and chairs so she has never owned a set. She does not want her home to look pieced together, but she is afraid to go into debt any further than she already has with her mortgage. She does have a good job, but she is the newest person in the company and if there would be cut backs she would be the first to be let go. In one of the used furniture stores we visited we found a nice tables and chairs set. The table stretched out of seat eight, however without the leaves it was a nice size table for four. It had two captain’s chairs and four straight chairs. She did not think she would have room for this set. I told her that she could put the four straight chairs around the table and buy cushions for the captain’s chairs and put them in her living room. This would give her extra seating in the living room space and if she needed the chairs when entertaining she would have them. The tables and chairs were in good shape and also had a small china cabinet that matched. She bought the set and my husband and I gave her the cabinet as a house warming present. Her modest home is shaping up to be very cozy.
