Do You Need A Vision Test?

When I took my daughter in for her kindergarten testing and registration, I was floored when the school nurse said that she thought my daughter was in need of a vision test. The thought had never crossed my mind because she was so young. She had some when much younger, but I had not thought about getting it done before kindergarten. I guess part of my problem was that all of those in my family that had corrective lenses got them after age twelve. It did not occur to me that she may need them sooner than that.

When she took her vision test, we found that she did need some corrective lenses. She was obviously too young for contacts, so we helped her pick out some glasses. Her sight was not all that bad, and should could have technically done well without them, but I wanted to protect her eyes. She wears her glasses most days, though there are times when she leaves them somewhere and it takes me a day to retrieve them. That’s not a bid deal for me, however, as I am just happy that she has had them since her vision test eight months ago and she has not broken them as of yet.

If you have a child in school, make sure they are getting a vision test at least one time a year. Even if no one in your family needs corrective lenses, get the test done anyway. They may just be the exception. Some children will struggle in school in many subjects, and parents begin to worry that they may have a learning disability. They forget to get simple tests like vision and hearing done first. Problems in these areas can lead to problems with learning simply because a child can not see the board or hear what a teacher is saying. They may not speak up about it either.

Don’t forget about getting a vision test in adulthood, even when you think you would never needed lenses. Some have eyes that remain sharp for their entire lives, but that is a rare thing. Not everyone will have to have glasses to see everything, but some may need them to see books and other items that are close to the face. A test for vision is important in all times, especially when someone is driving or operating any type of device that could harm someone else.
