Looking for a landscaping star? Consider star jasmine!

We all lead such busy lives, it's hard to find the time to maintain a garden. Gardening buffs make the time, because they love to fuss in the garden endlessly. If this isn't your bag, but you want a nice appearance, with the well known realtor's definition of curb appeal, star jasmine is a major asset you ought to consider. This versatile and well behaved plant has many lovely characteristics and fits into an array of landscaping situations.

Star jasmine is evergreen, with nice bright green, glossy leaves which present a cheerful picture any time of year. This plant is suitable even in water-restricted zones, as it doesn't require truckloads of water to thrive. Starting with a one-gallon can of star jasmine, within a few years you'll have a sizable shrub, easily pruned and trainable, to spiral around porch posts or fill in a sizable space as a ground cover.

This plant, used as a ground cover, fills in the space so thickly that it does not present a weeding problem, looks great and gives off that lovely, heady scent of jasmine during the summer flowering season. It blooms from mid-May right through to the onset of fall.

Star jasmine is particularly attractive when planted surrounding deck and porch posts. It's twining tendrils grab on to the supports, requiring little intervention on your part. An occasional trimming keeps it's vining branches from overtaking the porch, producing a pleasing, rounded silhouette of evergreen splendor. Even when not in bloom, it's so attractive and virtually maintenance free to boot!

Arbors and gazebos are other natural candidates for plantings of star jasmine. Planted around the supports of your gazebo, star jasmine provides a romantic backdrop for a summer dinner or after-dinner coffee with your beloved.

If you have a large space along a garden pathway that you'd like to fill with an attractive, low maintenance and manageable evergreen, you can't do much better than the star jasmine. Again, a little trimming now and then is all you need to keep it tidy and within the boundaries you describe.

This star of your landscaping tool box flowers continuously and profusely throughout the season. You can collect the flowers during the summer to dry for later use in fabulously scented fall and winter potpourris or closet and drawer sachets. You can also use your trimmings, with leaves and flowers for fresh bouquets to use throughout the house.

In all but the coldest growing zones, this plant is a landscaping mainstay. There's simply nothing to dislike!
