How To Choose A Hobby

as a therapist, I've seen more facets of human nature than most. I've seen a few very happy people, a few very unhappy people, and a lot of folks in the middle somewhere. There has been quite a bit of research done on what affects happiness, and most people are aware of some of the factors. Having a good relationship, making enough money, living in the good and supporting community, having close friends, eating well, and exercising are some of the more commonly known causes of happiness. One of the most crucial factors, however, is often overlooked by some of the most successful people: choosing a hobby that you enjoy.

You see, many adults never bother to choose a hobby. They may have had something that they enjoyed as a kid such as painting, playing an instrument, building models, or writing, but they put it away in favor of more serious pursuits as they got older. This is one of the most common and one of the most tragic mistakes that adults make in our culture. Americans are extremely hard-working and career driven people, and often neglect those crucial activities that make life worth living. Having something that you really enjoy to do as a way to unwind after work is as necessary as having a warm house and a comfortable bed.

Unfortunately, many people don't have the first idea how to choose a hobby. On the one hand, most folks have had some dream of living in alternative sort of lifestyle at some point. Maybe they wanted to be a musician as a child, or wanted to run off and join the circus. Maybe they loved model aircrafts and dreamed of being a Navy pilot. Because childhood hobbies are so closely linked to fantasies that most of us give up as we get older, it can be hard for adults to take seriously. How can you choose a hobby when you are a banker and know that, for the rest of your life, you will be a banker?

It is actually easier than you might think. You see, although the fantasy is part of choosing a hobby, it is not the whole thing. Anyone can get into the craft and art of doing something they love. Learning to play a musical instrument, putting together and painting models, drawing landscapes – all of these activities are rewarding in and of themselves. In a workplace environment where most of the stuff we do is so abstract, it is important to choose a hobby that provides tangible and rewarding results. You will thank yourself if you do.
